Reflection Report of Dissertation on mpact of information system on student learning experience

Abstract This essay reflects the lessons and obstacles that I faced during the course of writing my dissertation. Utilizing the Gibbs Reflective Cycle in order to illustrate the process, this essay reflects upon different stages of the dissertation process and thus serves to assist me in developing a further understanding of the opportunities for carrying out better research in the future. 1 Introduction The process of writing my dissertation began with the drive to expand my current capabilities and broaden my educational experience. Throughout this reflective essay I have use the Gibbs Reflective Cycle, which includes elements such as a basic description, my reactions, an evaluation of the experience, analysis, specific and general conclusions and my personal plan for action (Timmons et al, 2013). 2 Gibbs Reflective Cycle2.1 DescriptionIn order to accurately illustrate the scenario, a basic description enables me to envision the entire process dispassionately (Hegarty, 2011). My starting point for the research was the idea that increased technology has an impact on the learning process. This area presented a well-researched topic in the private sector, yet, I felt there was little material available on this subject, upon which to base quality evaluation for public facilities such as schools. In the beginning there was considerable stress before there was a single word written. As the study began to form, I began to feel more at ease with the needs of the project. Yet, many times there was the perception of very hard to find literature and material for me that made this research difficult from the outset. Taken together with my father’s ill health, I had considerably mixed feelings as to my ability to take this on.2.2 FeelingsMy emotional approach to this project was ver y striking and seemed to influence the results I obtained (Jasper, 2006). The very beginning of this project found me apprehensive and concerned that my skills were not sufficient for the task. Further, my father was sick during this period adding to my perception of the need to do function under pressure. There was significant stress at the outset that I felt diminished as I grew more familiar with the project. . I found the scope of this entire process was a little daunting. Perhaps my most unique feelings during this study came as I evaluated the students; I found a need to connect with the interviewees causing me considerable worry and the question of if I was approaching them in the best manner possible. Sometimes I had to set aside personal bias in order to accurately reflect the results (Pearson, 2013). As the project began to come to a close, I found considerable pride in the fact that I learned a great deal about process and method.2.3 EvaluationIt is important to assess th e positive and negative aspects of the project (Oelofsen, 2012). Most positive was my expectation I could achieve the goals of this work. Leading the negative aspects was my lack of confidence in my skill. A negative that turned into a positive was the manner that I interacted with the students and lecturers, initially I felt I was weak at this, but as I learned I became better. Overall, this was a good experience that I definitely learned from.2.4 AnalysisThere is a need to take stock of the situation in order to evaluate the experience (Pearson, 2013). My overall goal was to make sense of the impact of technology on the students. Through the research process, I feel I have expanded my own research abilities through trial and error, and am now more equipped to carry out research in the future. I have found others have had similar research experiences which has made me feel that I am part of a community and can gain from other’s knowledge. This appreciation of experience is a key factor that will enhance each following research project.2.5 ConclusionThe conclusions from this reflection lend depth to my learning experience (Park et al, 2011). Overall I felt that I learned that the research problem often carries more than the one possible outcome, which in turn means that I must be willing to accommodate unexpected elements. Specifically, I learned that I should be more assertive during the interview process, yet open to each person’s interpretations of the questions. I also gained the ability to research and write at a higher level, thereby aiding my future efforts. 2.6 Personal Action Plan Each of these considerations has provided me with lessons for future research (Forrest, 2008). Next project, I will not be hesitant to engage with the material. I will remain confident in my research strategy and take steps to not second guess my approach in order to strengthen my research and stay on track. Most importantly, I will have the experience to begin and accomplish any research project. 3 References Forrest, M. (2008). On becoming a critically reflective practitioner. Explore the Narrative of the Narrator in Pride and Prejudice.

Pride and Prejudice has been criticised among the literary community for the narrator thought to be from the view of Elizabeth is often counter argued by someone else saying that the narrator is an omniscient third person narrator. The narration of Pride and Prejudice is typically done by Elizabeth in many views, although it occasionally gives us information that Elizabeth is not aware of, which therefore makes us come to the conclusion that it is not Elizabeth narrating the book. The third person narrative gives a plain view of the novel in the sense of the dialogue, opinions and the events which are dominating throughout the novel rather than emotions. Elizabeth Bennet sometimes excludes from this rule, for example in chapter 36, this chapter is devoted entirely to Elizabeth’s emotional transformation right after the letter she received from Darcy. Although even though we do often get to hear the thoughts of other characters in the novel, it is mostly in shorter bursts compar ed to Elizabeth’s more complex outbursts. The narrator is using free indirect discourse or speech to show the reader the characters thoughts or spoken words, but without quotation marks. It let’s the reader know some of Elizabeth’s bad judgements against others like Darcy at the beginning of the novel. The use of dialogue brings forth veracity, which makes the reader question which character is to be believed. Although at the same time the truthfulness of the narrator themselves can be questioned. The veracity of Elizabeth’s dialogue is strengthened when the narrator doesn’t employ a detached narrative voice to describe the characters thoughts but is focalizing the proceeding through the character of Elizabeth, which is therefore meaning that the reader views the story from Elizabeth’s perspective. Seeing the story through Elizabeth’s eyes yet via the narrator’s voice, for example â€Å"the general pause which ensued made Elizab eth tremble†¦ She longed to speak, but could think of nothing to say†. It is therefore showing as a means of empathy of the reader in the part of Elizabeth. The use of the direct speech is a means of artistically orchestrating the voices of the two main roles of Darcy and Elizabeth. The line: â€Å"tax Mr. Bingley with having promised on his first coming into the country to give a ball at Netherfield† on page 33 isn't spoken by any particular character, neither directly, through the use of any dialogue, or indirectly, as in employing indirect speech. The narrator is using free indirect speech. The voice appears to be that of the narrator, although it has temporarily adopted the style and intonation of Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister. The line however isn't focalized through this character as the reader isn't given Lydia's perspective, such as earlier in this paragraph where the viewpoint was clearly that of Elizabeth. It is also important to realize that Elizabeth' s thoughts were not conveyed through a process of free indirect speech as there was no slippage into her manner of articulation. The omniscient narrator enters a brief stage of suspense as the novel’s two principal characters, Elizabeth and Darcy, step forth to convey the story in their own words. For example the reader is instantly able to discern the contrast of opinion between Elizabeth and Darcy, in one of the instances it is their views on poetry. The use of the direct speech is a means of artistically orchestrating these voices. The narrative voice that has been present throughout Pride and Prejudice is an anonymous, omniscient or all knowing one which shifts between simply relating to events as they occur, reflecting on such events and sometimes directly giving opinions of the characters.Austen’s narrative voice is as much an invented persona as the rest of the characters in the novel itself. Through this persona, Auten has been able to tell the story by another perspective and directly influence the reader’s opinions of the characters themselves. Thus this is a very effective method in conveying certain messages about the characters, more so than if Austen had chosen to write in another narrative voice like the first person. This report brings helps to develop our understanding about formulating hypotheses, testing hypotheses. At first we collect 50 people's person data then find out the customer of the gap ; bankrolling. Hen we comparison of the customer satisfaction. This research improves our knowledge, skills ; ability. In ABA program on the course BUS 405 Research Methodology for Business is very important things. Students know about the research. Knowledge of research not only helps one to look at the available information In sophisticated and creative ways in the fast-paced global environment that business race but this knowledge also helps In other ways. Modern technology has made research an excellent and a relatively smooth process.Today a personal computer with a modem or any means to an internet connection places one within easy reach of knowledge of what happening in the global environment. Technology has facilitated the research process and decision making. 1. 2 Objective * To Identify the satisfaction level To Identify the average expenditure * To identify the burden level * To identify the average per minute call charge of BAL ; GAP connection to subscribers opinion * To identify ; analysis that mobile phone is playing a significant role in the economic development of Bangladesh. . 3 Methodology Methodology is very important : useful thing in a report. Methodology is a guideline system for salving a problem with specific components. Such us phases, task, Method, techniques ; tools. There are two sources of data collection: * Primary sources There are several method of collecting data : The observation method is the mostly commonly used method in studied relating to behavioral sciences. In a way we all observe things around us, but this sort observation is not is scientific observation.Observation becomes a scientific tool and the method of data collection for the researcher when it serves a formulated research purpose is systematically planned and recorded and is subjected to checks and controls on validity band reliability. 2. Interview The interview method of collecting data involves presentation of oral – verbal stimuli and reply in terms of oral – verbal responses. This method can be used through arsenal interviews. 3.Through questionnaires The method of collecting data by mailing the questionnaires to respondents is most extensively employed in various economic and business surveys. The merits claimed on behalf of this method are as follows: a) There is low cost even when the universe so large and is widely spread geographically b) It is free from the bias of the interviewer: answers are in respondent own words, c) Respon dents have adequate time to give well thought out answers. D) Large samples can be made use of and thus the results can be made more dependable and reliable. 4. Through the schedulesThis method of data collection is very much like the collection of data through questionnaire with little difference which lies in the fact that schedules are being filled in by the enumerators who are specially appointed for purpose. These enumerators along with schedules go to respondents put to them the questions from the Performa in the order the questions are listed and record the replies in the space meant of the same Performa. Ins certain situation schedules may be handed over the respondents and enumerators may help them in recording their answers to various questions in the said schedules.Enumerators explain the aims and objects of the investigation and also remove the difficulties which any respondent may feel in understanding the implications of a particular question or the definition of conce pt of difficult terms. 5. Limitation On the way of the report, an analysis on the comparison of customer satisfaction teen Grahame Phone & Beanlike, I f aced the following problems, which may be termed as the limitations of the study. The major limitations of this study are given as follows I. There were some restrictions to have access to the information confidential by concern people ii. Some of the people cannot share their actual information. Iii. I have no proper experience to do this kind of report. So, inexperience creates obstacle to follow the systematic and logical research methodology.Part: 2 Overview of the cellular phone Industry 2. 1 history of the industry Grahame phone: Gramophone, widely known as GAP, is the leading telecommunications service provider in Bangladesh. With more than 32 million subscribers (as of June 2011) Gramophone is the largest cellular operator in the country. It is a Joint venture enterprise between Telethon and Grahame Telecoms Corporation, a non-profit sister concern of the internationally acclaimed micromanage organization and community development bank Grahame Bank. The idea of providing universal mobile phone access throughout Bangladesh, including its rural areas, was originally conceived by Cabal Quadric, who is currently the founder and director of telegram Center for Development and Entrepreneurship at MIT.He was inspired by the Grahame Bank microcircuit model and envisioned a business model where a cell phone can revere as a source of income. After leaving his Job as an investment banker in the United States, Quadric traveled back to Bangladesh, after meeting and successfully raising money from New York based investor and phil anthropist Joshua Mailman, and worked for three years gaining support from various organizations including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yuan's of Grahame Bank and the Norwegian telephone company, Telephone was finally successful in forming a consortium with Telethon and Grahame Bank to establish Gramophone.Quadric remained a shareholder of Gramophone until 2004. Gramophone received license for cellular phone operation in Bangladesh from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications on November 28, 1996. Gramophone started operations on offered a mobile-to-mobile connectivity (widely known as GAP-GAP connection), which created a lot of enthusiasm among the users. In August, 2006, Bankrolling became the first company to provide free incoming calls from BUTT for both postpaid and prepaid connections. On August 20, 2008, Bankrolling got past the landmark of 10 million subscriber base.Sheep Telecoms(Pat Ltd)-after talking lots- finally was granted license in 1989 to operate in the rural areas of 199 piazzas. Later it obtained GSM license in 1996 to extend its business to cellular mobile, radio telephone services. It launched operation in the last quarter of 1997 as a Bangladesh-Malaysia Joint venture. In July, 2004, it was reported that Egypt based Rococo Telecoms is set to purchase the Malaysian stakes in Sheep Telecoms through a hush-hush deal, as Sheep had failed to tap the business potentials in Bangladesh mainly due to a chronic feud between its Malaysian and Bangladesh partners. An agreement was reached with Rococo worth IIS$25 million was finalized in secret. The pact has been kept secret for legal reasons, considering dealing was the Joint venture agreement between the Bangladesh an d the Malaysian ratters, which dictates that if any party sells its Sheep shares, the other party will enjoy the first right to buy that. Integrated Services Ltd. (SSL), the Bangladesh partner, was being ‘officially shown as purchasing the shares held by Technology Resources Industries URI) of Malaysia for $15 million.SSL then paid another $10 million to Standard Chartered Bank to settle Saba's liabilities. In September, 2004, Rococo Telecoms Holdings purchased 100% of the shares of Sheep Telecoms (Pat. ) Limited (â€Å"Sheep†). It was acquired for IIS$60 million. To integrate and summarize what is known in an area. * To learn from others and stimulate new ideas. * Identification of variables. * Helps in developing theoretical framework. 3. 2 Determining Variables Simply defined, variable is a concept that varies. The values can differ at various times for the same object or person, or at the same time for different object or persons. There are two types of concepts. These are: Concept refers to a fixed phenomenon * Concepts that those varies in quantity, Intensity or amount The 2nd type of concept and measure of concept are variable. Because variable represents a quality that can exhibit difference in value, usually magnitude or strength, it may be said that a variable generally is anything that may assume different numerical or categorical values. For example: * Gender(male, female) * Marital status (Married, Unmarried ,widowed ,Divorced) * Family income * Attitude toward women empowerment(highly favorable-h ighly unfavorable) There are several types of Variables. There are: Dependent Variable * Independent Variable * Continuous Variable * Discontinuous Variable * Moderating Variable * Intervening Variables * Extraneous Variables * Relationship Among Variables 3. 3 Constructing theoretical framework The theoretical framework is the foundation on which the entire research project is based. It I logically developed, described and elaborated network of associations among the variable deemed relevant to the problem situation and identified through such processes as interviews, Observation and literature survey. Experience and intuition also guide in developing the theoretical framework. The components of the theoretical framework: 1 . The variables considered relevant to the study should be clearly identified and labeled in the discussions 2. The discussions should state how two or more variables are related to one another This should be dome for the important direction of the relationships c an be theorized on the basis of the finding s of previous research, then there should be an indication in the discussions as to whether the relationships would be positive or negative. 4. There should be a clear explanation of why we would expect these relationships to exist.

Mr Makoloyis Personal Profile and View Assignment

Mr Makoloyis Personal Profile and View - Assignment Example Mr Makoloyi says that the problems emanate from the fact that BA had persisted that the crew accept four-year pay pact. This was to see a freeze in actual pay up to 2014, something to which the crew has countered by giving the company a three-year pay cut pact. Although BA management has already rejected this. In addition, the company refused to commit to making longer the legitimacy of the industrial action ballot to let union staff members to be balloted on any suggestion from BA. Consequently, as Modlock (2010) observed, it resulted in another strike, third to be precise, ballot in five months following the rejection of BA’s proposal by cabin crew. Moreover, BA’s unwillingness to address Unite’s concerns about the impact on existing crew gave that the airline is pushing forward with its new fleet plans and especially on how the routes will be allocated among already functioning and the latest crew in the ages to come. Mr Makoloyi also observed that heightened tensions at the BA is caused by the manner in which the management relates with the employees and the stringent rules it has put forth to curb employee misbehavior like excessive drinking, and this has lowed the motivation of employees. Equally threatening an issue, related to pensions. Mr. Makoloyi explains that the announcement by the company in 2003 that it would close its ultimate remuneration scheme to all recently employed workers due to a major shortfall in the pension’s fund led to BALPA, a trade union that stands for BA pilots, threatened industrial action if the final remuneration scheme was reduced to a less generous package. The threat was approximated to have cost the company roughly eighty million pounds while the union projected that the adjustment would make a number of their members to lose 36% of their final pension. BALPA has roughly 2500 members (Modlick 2010).Mr. Makoloyi said that between 2005 and 2006, BA held mo re than 500 briefings with staff pertaining the same issue. All these negotiations with four unions yielded little given that each of these unions had their own unique issue of concern.

College education is worth Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

College education is worth - Research Paper Example of all this college education is a worthy investment since it is viewed not only as a challenge that changes one’s life but also an endeavor in today’s society. It is a well known fact that college graduates earn much more money than high school graduates. A research finding by The Hamilton Project in October 2012 confirmed that the gains from college education are much higher than of any other investment such as real estate, bonds and stocks. It was also found out that the returns from college have largely been steady over the past thirty five years, clearly demonstrating that the increasing cost of tuition has been offset by the amplified earning premium for degree holders. Thus in most respects, college education has never been more important. College graduates have always earned more money and find it easier in finding employment than their counterparts who are high school graduates. What however may be less instinctive is the fact that these gaps have been increasing recently. Thus for instance a youthful college graduate took home $4,000 more each year in the 1980s, inflation adjusted, than somebody of similar age who had no college e ducation (this was an average across the whole population and not just those working). This figure has however climbed to $12,000 each year over the past 30 years(Greenstone,Looney,2012). Whereas there is evidence about the lifetime value of increased education, cynics are increasingly pointing to increasing tuition costs to argue that college is not as good of a venture as it once was. It is true that there has been nearly 50% increase in cost of college over the last 3 decades (calculations courtesy of National Center for Education Statistics) which could be overstated. Foremost this increase in tuition does not cater for recent financial aid increases. Therefore, whereas the sticker cost of college may have risen, it is not clear to what scope the cost to students as well as their parents has risen. In fact the actual

Macroeconomic Analysis of the Indian Economy Assignment

Macroeconomic Analysis of the Indian Economy - Assignment Example 8). Gross domestic product Gross domestic product indicates an economy’s productivity and possible investment advantages from the economy. High gross domestic product shows positive prospects and increasing trend implies a growing economy with investment opportunities and high demand for utilities among its citizens (Dwivedi 2012, p. 55). India’s gross domestic product is relatively high; it has been estimated at about $ 1867 billion and its possible implications on the proposed investment can be explored from its trend. Trend in the country’s economic data for the past eight years identifies an increasing gross domestic product and this shows an increasing productivity level. The economy reported gross domestic product at about $ 834 billion in 2006, a value that increased to about $ 949 billion in the fiscal year ended in 2007, and $ 1238.6 billion in the fiscal year ended 2008. The economy’s gross domestic product recorded $ 1867.4 billion by the year. This trend identifies the economy’s growth potentials and it is therefore suitable for the proposed investment. The increasing trend also means availability of utilities and employment opportunities (Exim Bank 2013, p. 1). Service industry is the most active in the economy followed by the industrial sector. The service industry contributes more than half of the economy’s gross domestic product with the industrial and agricultural sector as the other major contributors. A review of the gross domestic product by sectors over the past eight years further identifies a decline in significance of the agricultural sector to the economy and an increase in significance of the service industry’s significance. Significance of the industrial sector has however been constant. The agricultural sector and its... This paper makes a conclusion that consumer price index is another significant indicator for evaluation. Consumers prices have been gaining stability over the past years and this further ascertain stability in money value. The country’s consumer index is however high and this communicates high living standards besides high ability to spend. Further, the high propensity to spend communicates high local demand for the investment should it be done in India. Foreign direct investment into the economy has been increasing and the trend identifies recognition of the country’s investment potentials by global investors. The macroeconomic indicators therefore identify positive investment prospects with the Indian economy because the indicators have been improving in the past years. The economy’s gross domestic product, exchange rate, current account balance, foreign direct investment, and consumer price index indicate increasing stability. In addition, the country’s political environment, accessibility to the global economy, and its investment oriented fiscal and monetary policies identify its suitability to the company’s proposed investment. Its inflation rate and the low unemployment rate, however, raise concerns of potential economic challenges. Poor technology may further challenge the investment, but technology can be imported. This report therefore recommends the Indian economy for the proposed investments because of the diverse economic advantages that outweighs the possible disadvantages.

It depicts a story of a US Navy Aviation officer who engages into conflict following disagreements with Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant. This was his personal instructor in the Aviation Officer Candidate School. The film, An Officer and Gentleman, starred seven characters including Richard Gere, Debra Winger, David Keith and Lisa Blount among others. The film depicts a mixture of themes, though most prominently featured is the theme of romance. However, in its extreme sense, the film concerns the blue-collar undermined and downtrodden individuals. This film precisely deals with the issues of heart in an astounding and incredible ways. This follows taking chances in every plot development issue, including the choice of music, instrumentals and characters. The music used in this film is thrilling. The musical instrumentals used to come up with this music were closely monitored, sound and rhythm assessed as well as melodiously tested before the final film production was made (Gordon, 2010). This has made the film even more interesting. The music, â€Å"Up Where We Belong†, has been rated the Best Original Song in the BAFTA Film Award making it emerge the winner. However, the legacy of this music, as well as the film as a whole, is based on the nature of instrumentals used. It is of critical importance to note that the instrumental music in this film worked superbly well following several reasons. The good instrumental work in the film was key in coming up with good chord progression in the music in the film (Gordon, 2010). It is of significant to note that a good instrumental music needs a superbly strong melody (Colson, 2012). In order to capture the interest and approval of the audience, the melody in the instrumental should be captivating, exciting and strong. The choice of melody in

Oskar Schindler Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Oskar Schindler - Essay Example Oskar Schindler is known to have saved the lives of around a thousand Jews at the time of the Holocaust. What follows is a detailed account of Mr. Schindler (Crowe, 2004). The Life of Oskar Schindler Many people believe that Oskar Schindler was a true hero, at a time when the Jews were brutally murdered; Oskar Schindler actually saved the lives of 1000 Jews. What is most remarkable is the fact that he himself was a Jew ant that too one belonging to the Nazi party. For someone to have the courage to do that speaks volumes about his character. Oskar Schindler owned three factories, out of which only one employed Jewish forced laborers. In 1944, Emalia (the factory that employed Jewish laborers) was at its peak and had employed 1700 workers out of which 1000 were Jews. During the time of the torture, the Emalia workers were also subject to brutal treatment at the Plaszow concentration camp, however, whenever possible Schindler intervened to see that the treatment at the camp was as less severe as possible. Moreover, Schindler also gave refuge to his employees at the Emalia along with approximately 450 other Jews so that they were able to evade the torture and brutal murders at Plaszow (Bulow, 2009).

Marketing Strategy Development Process of Imaging Outpatient Assignment

Marketing Strategy Development Process of Imaging Outpatient Diagnostic Center - Assignment Example Furthermore, many procedures and tests in an outpatient center take place in a few hours hence the ability to serve as many clients/patients as possible gives the business an edge. The center establishes a diagnostic and examining tool that uses low-energy x-rays to scrutinize the human breast. Most importantly, Quality Imaging has recently added an all-digital screening mammography in the offices as a step to ensure it delivers best quality care to patients. Digital mammography gives highest resolution images useful in detecting breast cancer in its earlier development stages. In fact, the images appear on radiologist’s computer in a matter of seconds. The ability to use all-digital screening mammography is an improvement from the traditional diagnostic system, which also involved physical examination of the human breast. It is also significant to note the system has no waiting time for the film to develop, which implies patients wait less time to know test results. In addition, digital mammography allows the radiologist to analyze breast images with the help of special high-resolution monitors. Further, it is possible to adjust monitors for contrast, brightness and zoom depending on requirements. One of the major benefits of this technology is the ability to manipulate images. Moreover, there is reduced the need to retake due to under or over exposure, the result of which saves time lowering a patient’s exposure to X-rays. The center has an ever-open laboratory center that helps diagnose varieties of illness. Laboratory services are accessible to patients referred to Quality Imaging or those interested in lab tests conditions. In the lab, patients are tested for a number of illnesses, which include blood tests and tests for various infections. There is a follow-up process that accompanies testing to ensure treatment if the need arises. Nonetheless, no appointment is necessary to have one enjoy laboratory services.

Unit 4 Individual Project Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

Unit 4 Individual Project - Essay Example on creates the incentive to trade the products you are good at producing in exporting transitions and the goods and services a country is not efficient at producing are imported into an economy. The end result of the trade activity among nation is a better standard of living of all the participating nations in international trade (Nobelprice, 2008). The Ricardian theory was derived from the principles of the Heckscher-Ohlin theory as far as its objectives. The theory is better than Heckscher-Ohlin because it adds the element of labor theory of value into the demand and supply approach used in the Heckscher-Ohlin economic model (Gontijo, 2000). Another major difference is the inclusion of the concept of competitive advantage into the Ricardian theory. Trade activity among trade partners positively affects the distribution of income of the countries involved in the transactions. The Heckscher-Ohlin model demonstrates the positive outcome of trade which increases the distribution of income the resident of nations. The way distribution of income is improved through trade is due to the appreciation of value as direct consequence of trade transactions. For example Argentina is able to produce apples at $1 a pound, and sells them in the open market at $1.75 per pound. In Brazil it cost $2 to produce the same apples, then Brazil has no incentive to produce apples since it can purchase them at $1.75 from Argentina. In the transaction Brazil acquired value in the form of $0.25 which is distributed in the economy of the nation and which positively affects the standard of living of all Brazilians. Factor endowment theory equalizes the relative costs between nations as well as the prices of factors of production (Csus). The principle assumption of the theory is that price equalization is derived from international activity trade among nations. The applicability of endowment theory is greatly enhanced by Leontief theory. The Leontief theory says that a country specialized in

The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Essay Example for Free

The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Essay Have you ever thought of running away for your own freedom? In Mark Twain’s The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, the river isn’t mean for transportation anymore, the river means the whole lots for Huck and Jim, because it is a way for them to have freedom. The river also influenced in Mark Twain’s writing this book, through his childhood, he spent the most living in the river. River ends up symbolizing freedom for those from captivity to freedom in the state of Ohio. The restrictive society makes Jim and Huck run away for freedom, Jim wanted to get away from slavery, and Huck had to faked his death to get away from his father, so the river is the only route they can take if they want to be free in both in that present moment and their respective future. To Huck, the river represents a life beyond the rule of society, and that’s a life he could get used to. Racism had played a big role during the time period the book took place. If you were white you were a free man. If you were an African American you were doing hard labor. A quote from the book describes the color aspect and the whole African American versus white issue of freedom. ‘’Why, they said he couldn’t be sold till he had been in the state six months, and he hadn’t been there that long yet† (Twain, p. 27). So, most of the time in the book, Jim had to hid himself from the outside world, because he was still enslaved. For the conclusion i picked a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, the quote related to Huck’s adventures. â€Å"With Great Freedom Comes With Great Responsibility. ’’ While on their way to freedom, Jim and Huck been through all kinds of dangerous situations. Huck’s survival knowledge was really important during his adventure, He is an intelligent guy, he used his survival knowledge to hide himself and Jim. Most of his ideas come from Tom Sawyer, Widow, and his father. As the adventures goes on, Huck learns that freedom comes with great responsibility, the responsibility to decide for yourself how to be a good, moral person.

Manages debated and controversial topic in english

Manages debated and controversial topic in english The way in which our innate language abilities are able to influence how successfully we manage to use a language is a somewhat debated and controversial topic within the world of linguistics. Many believe that universal grammar has a very strong influence on how well an individual is able to structure sentences and use grammar while others disagree, at least with regard to how important it is in different situations. It is often argued that universal grammar has at least a moderate influence on first language acquisition, but the affect it has on second language acquisition is where the controversies lie, with many researchers having opposing opinions. Individuals who learn a foreign language frequently experience problems with using correct grammar, at least until they are very advanced in the acquisition process. A lot of the time, individuals learning a second language take a very long time to become as proficient as native speakers are, and they even often never reach the same l evel of proficiency as native speakers of the language. The significance of this is highly debated however, with a variety of causes being outlined as possible from many different studies. Time and time again, it has been shown that individuals who learn a second language often use grammar inappropriately, even when they may be at least moderately accustomed to the language and have been learning it for a reasonably long amount of time. For example, Lu (2001) found that Chinese learners speaking English often used the word â€Å"the† when it would be more correct to use â€Å"a†. This is a trend that has been found in many so-called L2 learners (i.e. people who are learning a second language). Interestingly however, such errors have also been found in the acquisition of English as a first language. A good example of this was in a study by Schaeffer and Mathewson in 2005. They found that children learning English as a first language make very similar errors to the errors individuals learning a second language make. They also state that children seem to start off by obeying what seem to be innate universal grammar principals, but as their learning develops, they eventually start to apply the rules of the language in the way adults do (through learning, conditioning and observation). The suggestion here therefore is that universal language is the cause of this incorrect grammar usage in both children learning to speak and in adults learning a second language, at least to some degree. This implies that universal grammar may indeed have a role in second language acquisition, since it seems that there are certain innate rules of language development that everyone follows right or wrong. Of course, many other studies imply that universal grammar influences the individual to speak properly rather than wrongly (albeit, at a different stage of the language acquisition process). It is argued that the input an individual receives when learning a language is not enough to allow them to successfully and properly use grammar, therefore meaning innate language abilities have a strong influence on language development, at least with regard to first language acquisition and likely with second acquisition too (White, 1985). A big question is raised from this theory of universal grammar being so integral to successful language development. When considering the idea that a large part of grammar ability may be innate, one must question how to differentiate between innate language abilities and learned language knowledge knowledge that (for L2 learners) was gained from the learning of their first language. To differentiate between innate and learned phenomena, there are two areas to be considered (White, 1990). Firstly, the input the individual receives for learning the language should be insufficient for the phenomenon to be present. Secondly, it should be different from phenomena learned as part of the first language. The fulfilment of both of these criteria could in theory mean an innate language ability is responsible for the production of the specific phenomenon in the L2 learning. Most studies into L2 language acquisition have been based around adult learners. Zdorenko and Paradis (2007) however carried out a study into second language learning in children. Within this study, they addressed numerous questions, taking into account how much first language background affects second language acquisition. Their conclusions were that the childrens first language influenced their acquisition early on in the learning process, but not later on, once the child had become more competent. They do not directly suggest that any part of the L2 learning however is innate, and instead suggest that article semantics could be responsible for the presence of certain phenomena. The idea that universal grammar may have a role in the development of first language acquisition is generally more accepted than the idea that it plays a role in second language acquisition. This largely could be to do with the fact that determining a role for innate language abilities at the stage of learning a second language is a lot more challenging, since with first language acquisition the only confounding factor that needs to be taken into account is the level of input the learner receives about the language. Flynn (1996) suggested a model for the role of universal grammar in L2 learners. The model has 3 possibilities: the no access hypothesis, the partial access hypothesis and the full access hypothesis. The no access hypothesis states that universal grammar simply is not accessible to L2 learners and all learning is simply due to input the learner gains. The partial access hypothesis claims that universal grammar is partially available to the L2 learner, but only those parameters that characterise first language phenomena are available. The full access hypothesis states that universal grammar is completely available to L2 learners and that any differences between first and second language acquisition can be accounted for via other ways. If any part of this model is correct, it seems unlikely that it is the full access hypothesis. As stated previously, much evidence exists suggesting L2 language acquisition is rarely ever as complete as first language acquisition. Or at least, it is a much slower process and it takes a long time for L2 learners to become as proficient in the language as native speakers. Hale (1996) suggests that universal grammar is very difficult to distinguish from first language acquisition in L2 learners, implying that the two are almost one of the same. Indeed, many researchers agree with the idea that universal language is something that goes hand-in-hand with first language acquisition, but not with second language acquisition. It seems that the matter of how involved universal language is in second language acquisition may never be resolved. On one hand, the presence of certain phenomena in L2 that are absent in the first language along with evidence that the phenomena have not been learned suggest that maybe innate language skill do have a role in L2 learning, however evidence from Zdorenko and Paradis (2007) along with other studies suggest that innate language abilities at least dont hold the most significant level of importance. If universal grammar does have a role in the learning of a second language, Flynns hypothesis of partial access would arguably seem most plausible. The fact that many individuals learning a second language never become fully competent at it suggests that full access is not possible, since this would therefore suggest no variation in the ability to speak a second language from the ability to speak a first language. No access however seems unlikely to, since the fact that there are similarities in the mistakes L2 learners and children learning a first language make implies that there is some innate mechanism governing language ability; a mechanism all individuals have that predisposes them to language and which diminishes as they age but never fades. This theory is further backed up by the fact that, within the Zdorenko and Paradis study, they found that the children had features of language acquisition in common with both first and second language acquisition, implying that maybe thei r innate language skills (due to their age) were having an affect (although this is not an idea that is pointed out within the study). The ‘critical period hypothesis is a well-known theory of language acquisition which states that children are much more primed for learning languages than adults. This hypothesis fits together very well with the partial access hypothesis. The critical period hypothesis is widely accepted by a large number of linguists. One of the best known examples here is that of Genie, a girl brought up in social isolation, who started to learn to talk at a late age (Curtiss, 1977). Although she was shown to not be mentally impaired, she was never able to learn to speak properly. It is most likely this was due to her age and her inability therefore to gain full access to her innate language abilities. Therefore, universal grammar seems to be something that very possibly does influence L2 learning and adult learners, but its effect diminishes with age, and therefore children can learn languages first, second and beyond more effectively than adults.

Introduction to Malaysia

Introduction to Malaysia Submitted by Harkomal Singh Khaira Submitted to Alen mataia Student Id No 21601024 MALAYSIAN CUISINE Road nourishment a cook get ready murtabak at a mamak slow down Malaysian nourishment contains cooking traditions and practices found in Malaysia, and mirrors the multiethnic makeup of its population.[1]The overwhelming some portion of Malaysias masses can by and large be apportioned among three critical ethnic get-togethers: Malays, Chinese and Indians. Whatever is left of the indigenous social orders of Sabah and Sarawak in East Malaysia, the Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia, the Peranakan and Eurasian creole gatherings, and furthermore an essential number of outside pros and segregates. Accordingly of chronicled relocations, colonization by remote forces, and its topographical position inside its more extensive home locale, Malaysias culinary style in the present day is fundamentally a melange of customs from its Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and ethnic Bornean nationals, with overwhelming to light impacts from Thai, Portuguese, Dutch, and British foods, to give some examples. This brought about an orchestra of flavors, making Malaysian cooking profoundly perplexing and various. Since Peninsular Malaysia imparts a typical history to Singapore, it is basic to discover adaptations of a similar dish crosswise over both sides of the outskirt paying little respect to place of birthplace, for example, laksa and chicken rice. Additionally as a result of their nearness, notable relocations and close ethnic and social family relationship, Malaysia offers culinary ties with Indonesia,[2] as both countries frequently share certain dishes, for example, satay, rendang and sambal. The Flag of Malaysia, otherwise called the (Malay: Jalur Gemilang (Stripes of Glory)), is made out of a field of 14 exchanging red and white stripes along the fly and a blue canton bearing a bow and a 14-point star known as the Bintang Persekutuan (Federal Star). The 14 stripes, of equivalent width, speak to the equivalent status in the alliance of the 13 part states and the government, while the 14 purposes of the star speak to the solidarity between these entities. The sickle speaks to Islam, the nations legitimate religion; the blue canton symbolizes the solidarity of the Malaysian individuals; the yellow of the star and bow is the illustrious shade of the Malay rulers. In blazon, the Malaysian banner is depicted as: A standard Gules, seven bars Argent; the canton Azure accused of excrescent and mullet of fourteen focuses Or. This signifies a warning with seven level white stripes; the upper-left (crane) quarter is blue with a yellow melting away bow (i.e. horns indicating vile) a nd a yellow 14-pointed star. The banner of Malaysia, which was initially raised on 16 September 1963, started from the banner of the Federation of Malaya. Preceding the making of the national banner, each state in Malaya had its own particular banner, a large number of which are unaltered in configuration right up til today. At the point when the Federation of Malaya supplanted the fleeting Malayan Union, the organization government through the Federal Legislative Council required a plan challenge for another banner. Three banners were sent to the general population. The main banner had 11 white stars with two Malay kris (knifes) in the center against a blue setting. The second banner concentric hover of 11 stars around crossed keris on a blue field. The third had 11 exchange red and white stripes and a yellow bow and a five-pointed star on a blue foundation in the upper left hand corner. The third plan, by Mohamad Hamzah of the Public Works Department, was picked as the champ through an open survey held by The Malay Mail.[4] Since Malaya was battling the communists amid the Malayan Emergency, the five-pointed star had an amusing similarity to the communists images. Accordingly, the star was altered to suit six more focuses. The Malayan banner was endorsed by King George VI on 19 May 1950 and was initially brought up before Istana Selangor on 26 May 1950. On 31 August 1957, it was raised upon autonomy at Merdeka Square set up of the British Union Flag. TRADATIONAL DISHES OF MALAYASIA The main traditional dishes of Malaysia is rice dishes Rice dishes Name Region Type Nasi goreng pattaya Peninsular Malaysia Rice dish Nasi kandar Penang Rice dish Nasi kerabu Kelantan, Terengganu Rice dish Nasi lemak Malaysia (Popular in Brunei, Singapore, Riau Islands and Southern Thailand) Rice dish National dish of Malaysia NATIONAL FOOD OF MALAYSIA Nasi lemak is a Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut drain and pandan leaf. It is generally found in Malaysia, where it is viewed as the national dish; it is additionally prominent in neighboring nations, for example, Singapore; Indonesia (particularly in Eastern Sumatra), Brunei, and Southern Thailand. The religion of Malaysia Penang State Mosque in George Town, Penang. Malaysia is a multicultural and multiconfessional nation. As of the 2010 Population and Housing Census, 61.3 percent of the populace rehearses Islam; 19.8 percent Buddhism; 9.2 percent Christianity; 6.3 percent Hinduism; and 1.3 percent conventional Chinese religions. The rest of represented by different religions, including Animism, Folk religion, Sikhism and other conviction systems. Numbers of self-portrayed agnostics in Malaysia are few; the state has gone under feedback from human rights associations for its oppression atheists. Islam in Malaysia is spoken to by the Shafii adaptation of Sunni religious philosophy and jurisprudence.[3][4] Islam was presented by brokers landing from Arabia, China and India. It turned out to be solidly settled in the fifteenth century. The constitution makes Malaysia a common nation and ensures opportunity of religion, while building up Islam as the religion of the Federation to symbolize its significance to Malaysian society.[3][4] The ruler is for the most part observed as the shield of the confidence in the nation and individuals from the regal family may lose certain benefits in the event that they leave Islam and change over to another religion. Malaysian Chinese practice different beliefs: Mahayana Buddhism and the Chinese customary religion (counting Taoism). Hinduism is rehearsed by the greater part of Malaysian Indians. Christianity has built up itself in a few groups, particularly in East Malaysia. It is not fixing to a particular ethnic gathering. Different religions , for example, the Bahai Faith and Sikhism likewise have followers in Malaysia. Relations between various religious gatherings are for the most part very tolerant. Christmas, Chinese New Year, and Deepavali have been proclaimed national occasions close by Islamic occasions, for example, Muhammads birthday and so on. Different gatherings have been set up to attempt to advance religious comprehension among the diverse gatherings, with religious agreement seen as a need by Malaysian government officials. Be that as it may, Muslims are kept from changing over to different religions by law,[5] in spite of article 11 of the constitution pronouncing opportunity of religion. Limitations on religious flexibility exist, particularly for Muslims who are not permitted to lawfully change over to different religions, and are regularly constrained into recovery camps on the off chance that they endeavour to do. GEOGRAPHY OF MALASYIA The geography of Malaysia manages the physical and human geology of Malaysia, a Southeast Asian nation. There are two noteworthy parts to this nation, Peninsular Malaysia toward the west and East Malaysia toward the east, in extra various littler islands encompassing both landmasses. Peninsular Malaysia is arranged on the southernmost area of the Malay Peninsula, south of Thailand, north of Singapore and east of the Indonesian island of Sumatra; East Malaysia contains the majority of the northern piece of Borneo Island, with land outskirts imparted to Brunei toward the north and Indonesian Borneo toward the south. Geology HISTORY INFLUNCES    Malaysia is situated on the Sunda retire, and is structurally dormant. The most established shakes in the nation date from 540 million years back, and are generally sedimentary. The most widely recognized type of shake is limestone, framed amid the Paleozoic Era. Limestone set down in East Malaysia amid the Tertiary time frame has since dissolved, and such disintegration shapes bowls of sedimentary rocks rich in oil and regular gas. The mountain runs in Malaysia were framed through orogenesis starting in the Mesozoic era. The aggregate land territory of Malaysia is 329,613 square kilometers (127,260 sq mi), the 66th biggest nation on the planet as far as area.[6] It is the main nation to contain arrive on both terrain Asia and the Malay archipelago.[3] Peninsular Malaysia makes up 132,090 square kilometres (51,000 sq mi),[1] or 39.7% of the nations property region, while East Malaysia covers 198,847 square kilometres (76,780 sq mi), or 60.3%. From the aggregate land zone, 1,200 square kilometres (460 sq mi) or 0.37% is comprised of water, for example, lakes, waterways, or other inner waters. Malaysia has an aggregate coastline of 4,675 kilometres (2,905 mi), and Peninsular Malaysia has 2,068 kilometres (1,285 mi), while East Malaysia has 2,607 kilometres (1,620 mi) of coastline. Malaysia has the 29th longest coastline on the planet. The two particular parts of Malaysia, isolated from each other by the South China Sea, share a to a great extent comparative scene in that both West (Peninsular) and East Malaysia highlight beach front fields ascending to slopes and mountains. HIS Malaysia is a Southeast Asian nation situated on vital ocean path that opens it to worldwide exchange and remote culture. Hinduism from India and Buddhism from China overwhelmed early territorial history, achieving their crest amid the rule of the Sumatra-based Srivijaya civilisation, whose impact reached out through Sumatra, Java, the Malay Peninsula and quite a bit of Borneo from the seventh to the thirteenth hundreds of years. Despite the fact that Muslims had gone through the Malay Peninsula as right on time as the tenth century, it was not until the fourteenth century that Islam first solidly settled itself. The selection of Islam in the fourteenth century saw the ascent of various sultanates, the most noticeable of which was the Sultanate of Malacca. Islam affected the Malay individuals, yet has likewise been impacted by them. The Portuguese were simply the principal European pilgrim forces to build up themselves on the Malay Peninsula and Southeast Asia, catching Malacca i n 1511, trailed by the Dutch in 1641. In any case, it was the British who, after at first building up bases at Jesselton, Kuching, Penang and Singapore, at last secured their administration over the region that is currently Malaysia. The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 characterized the limits between British Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies (which progressed toward becoming Indonesia). A fourth period of outside impact was migration of Chinese and Indian labourers to address the issues of the pioneer economy made by the British in the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. Japanese intrusion amid World War II finished British mastery in Malaysia. The consequent control of Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak from 1942 to 1945 unleashed patriotism. In the Peninsula, the Malayan Communist Party waged war against the British. An extreme military reaction was expected to end the revolt and achieve the foundation of a free, multi-racial Federation of Malaya on 31 August 1957. On 31 August 1963, the British domains in North Borneo and Singapore were allowed autonomy and shaped Malaysia with the Peninsular states on 16 September 1963. Roughly two years after the fact, the Malaysian parliament passed a bill to separate Singapore from the Federation. A showdown with Indonesia happened in the mid 1960s. Race revolts in 1969 prompted the burden of crisis manage, and an abridgement of political life and common freedoms which has never been completely turned around. The Malaysian government has made the stride of characterizing Malaysian Culture through the 1971 National Culture Policy, which characterized what was viewed as official culture, basing it around Malay culture and coordinating Islamic impacts. This particularly influenced dialect; just Malay writings are viewed as official social writings. Malaysia was framed when the Federation of Malaya converged with North Borneo (today the area of Sabah), Sarawak, and Singapore (withdrew 1965) in 1963,[1] and social contrasts amongst Peninsular and East Malaysia remain. Amid the arrangement of Malaysia, official power was vested in the Perikatan (later the Barisan Nasional) coalition of three racially based political gatherings, to be specific the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), and Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC). UMNO has overwhelmed the coalition from its inception.   Although Islam is the official state religion, the Constitution of Malaysia ensures flexibility of religion. Ethnic groups Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual society, and the numerous ethnic gatherings in Malaysia keep up isolated social identities.[5] The general public of Malaysia has been depicted as Asia in miniature.[6] The first culture of the region originated from its indigenous tribes, alongside the Malays who moved there in antiquated circumstances. Significant impact exists from the Chinese and Indian societies, going back to when exchange with those nations started in the region. Different societies that vigorously impacted that of Malaysia incorporate Persian, Arabic, and British. The structure of the legislature, alongside the racial adjust of force created by the possibility of a social contract, has brought about minimal impetus for the social osmosis of ethnic minorities in Malaya and Malaysia.[7] The administration has truly made little qualification between Malay culture and Malaysian culture. Arts Routine Malaysian workmanship is generally centred around the strengths of cutting, weaving, and silversmithing.[22] Traditional craftsmanship ranges from handwoven bushel from nation zones to the silverwork of the Malay courts. English composition remained restricted to the higher class until the passage of the printing press. Secretly made Chinese and Indian written work appeared in the nineteenth century. ENVIRONMENT OF MALASYIA The earth of Malaysia alludes to the biotas and topographies that constitute the indigenous habitat of this Southeast Asian country. Malaysias biology is megadiverse, with a biodiverse scope of vegetation found in different ecoregions all through the nation. Tropical rainforests envelop between 59% to 70% of Malaysias aggregate land territory, of which 11.6% is pristine. Malaysia Has the worlds fifth biggest mangrove range, which adds up to over an a large portion of a million hectHuman intercession represents a critical risk to the regular habitat of this nation. Agribusiness, ranger service and urbanization add to the obliteration of woodlands, mangroves and other flourishing biological systems in the country. Ecosystems and scenes are drastically modified by human improvement, including the development of streets and damming of rivers.[6] Geographical wonders, for example, avalanches and flooding in the Klang Valley, alongside murkiness, come from far reaching deforestation. Inconspicuous environmental change happens as an immediate consequence of air contamination and the nursery impact, which thusly is brought on by the emanation of nursery gasses. Low-lying ranges close to the ares (more than 1.2 million acres).   Coastline of Sabah and Sarawak are under risk from ebb and flow ocean level rise. CLIMATE Malaysia lies along the main parallel north to the seventh parallel north circles of degree, by and large proportional to Roraima (Brazil), the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya. As showed by the Kà ¶ppen air portrayal structure, Malaysia has a tropical rainforest air due to its closeness to the equator. The country is hot and sticky enduring as the year progressed, with a typical temperature of 27  °C (80.6  °F) and no change in the yearly temperature. The country experiences two tempest seasons, the Northeast Monsoon and the Southwest Monsoon. The Northeast Monsoon passes on generous precipitation toward the east shore of Peninsular Malaysia and western Sarawak, while the Southwest Monsoon infers dryer conditions all through the country except for Sabah. In the midst of the Southwest Monsoon, most states experience immaterial precipitation as a result of the steady aerates and cools in the region and the Sumatran mountain run, which accomplishes the rain shadow affect . Sabah experiences more precipitation in perspective of the tail effect of tempests in the Philippines. The urban warmth island effect is achieved by overdevelopment and general human activities in the urban groups of Malaysia. Malaysia possesses over a thousand sorts of fowls, vertebrates, snakes and frightening little animals. It is possible to spot exceptional animal species in the midst of experiencing Malaysia. For instance, elephants, orangutans, tigers, panthers, monkeys, rhinos, Malaysian sun bears, crocodiles, and ungulates occur in Malaysia INNOVATION OF MALASYIA Malaysia is viewed as an upper centre wage nation. The Najib Razak coalition government appraises that 6% yearly development is important to achieve high-wage status by 2020. This is a fairly higher rate than both the normal for the earlier decade and the World Banks projection for 2016 and 2017 of around 4.2% development. A more prominent concentrate on development will be important to reach [the governments] objective. Advancement for comprehensive and manageable improvement has as of late turned into a generally talked about range of open arrangement. Elements, for example, low homestead efficiency, expanding wellbeing related issues, cataclysmic events, natural issues and fiscal swelling were viewed as the key focuses to address. In 2014, the administration propelled transdisciplinary explore gifts with the goal of including societal advantages among the execution criteria at Malaysias exploration colleges and giving motivators to advance science in support of neediness easing an d feasible development. On 16 November 2016, Malaysia confirmed the Paris Agreement. As per the World Resources Institute, Malaysia contributed around 0.9% of worldwide nursery gas emanations in 2012, considering land-utilize changes and ranger service. In spite of the fact that Malaysia stays focused on decreasing its carbon emanations by 40% by 2020 more than 2012 levels, as promised by the Malaysian leader at the atmosphere summit in Warsaw in 2013, it confronts developing supportability challenges. In January 2014, Selangor, the most created of Malaysias unified states, experienced water deficiencies. These were brought about by high contamination levels and the drying of stores as an outcome of abuse. Interpretive Richness of Leslie Marmon Silkos Ceremony Essay -- Silko

The interpretative richness of Silko’s Ceremony Leslie Marmon Silko’s Ceremony is the extraordinary tale of Tayo, a mixed-blood Native American in his long quest to cure the suffering that afflicts him and his people. The novel is complex enough that it can be interpreted in the context of starkly different paradigms, each highlighting important facets of the story. For instance, in the article â€Å"Feminine perspectives at Laguna Pueblo: Silko’s Ceremony,† Edith Swan offers a (symbolic) analysis of the plethora of important female characters in the novel that is based on a deliberately unicultural, Laguna worldview on the grounds that â€Å"[...] western presumptions must be set aside so that they do not adversely bias or manipulate tribal structures of meaning. Native premises must be allowed to stand on their own terms† (309). On the other hand, Dennis Cutchins, in his article â€Å"‘So that the nations may become genuine Indian’: Nativism and Leslie Marmon Silko’s Ceremony† advocates a politico-historical interpretation of the novel as a reaction against the overwhelming influence of Western civilization on Native American culture. This reaction, Cutchins argues, takes the form of a â€Å"revision† of history for the purpose of removing the Western influence and adapting ancient traditions to better serve the needs of the present, thus resolving the conflict between the two cultures. Cutchins’ interpretation therefore, is multicultural, focussing on the historical relationship between Western and Native American cultures and providing a paradigm (namely, nativism) that helps put it all in perspective. By utilizing divergent paradigms in interpreting Ceremony, Swan and Cutchins both succeed in highlighting the many fascinating... ...nse in the context of the outside world and the history of the Native American people. The differing theses however, do not contradict each other. Rather, they complement each other by providing a more complete picture through the simultaneous consideration of socio-cultural as well as politico-historical perspectives of the novel. 7 Works Cited Cutchins, Dennis. â€Å"‘So that the nations may become genuine Indian’: Nativism and Leslie Marmon Silko’s Ceremony.† Journal of American Culture 22.4 (1 Dec. 1999): not paginated. Rates of Reaction :: Papers

Rates of Reaction Prediction (Na2 S2 O3 + 2HCL ---> 2NaCl + SO2 + S + H2O) This is the equation for Sodium Thiosulphate reacting with 2 Molar of Hydrochloric Acid. There are a number of variables in the experiment which must be controlled in order for the experiment to be a fair test. These include temperature, which must be kept constant throughout the experiment or the results would not match. The experiment will be performed at room temperature (Around 25 degrees). Another variable is volume of Hydrochloric acid, which must be kept the same as well. For this experiment, I will be using 5cm of HCL. If all of these variables are controlled, then the experiment will be a fair test. However, there will be a degree of human error because there is no definate point at which the cross disappears, it relies on human judgement. My prediction is that as the concentration of Sodium Thiosulphate decreases, the rate of reaction will decrease accordingly and the reaction will take longer to complete. This is the basic principle of the Particle Theory. The particle theory is that if there are less atoms to 'collide' into each other and react, then the reaction will be slower than if there were more atoms to collide. Therefore, if the concentration, so number of atoms if lower, then the amount of collisions between Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric Acid will be less frequent. Also, when the concentration of Sodium Thiosulphate is higher, the water will get cloudy faster due to the fact that there will be less water available to disrupt the reaction. [IMAGE] As the reaction takes place, the amount of Hydrochloric Acid and Sodium Thiosulphate decreases, which therefore decreases the probability of the two atoms hitting each other, reacting. The reaction will slow down, because if two Thiosulphate atoms or two HCL atoms collide, then nothing will happen. This is the particle theory. Method Equipment  · Beakers  · Measuring cylinders

The Cathedral

â€Å"Where ignorance is our master, there is no possibility of real peace†, (Dalai Lama XIV). This quote relates to the narrator in Raymond Carver’s short story, â€Å"The Cathedral†. In this story Bub’s ignorance is shown in various parts throughout the story. Towards the end of the story, Bub has an epiphany. This makes him realize how ignorant he’s been towards his wife as well as Robert, her childhood sweetheart and present day best friend. He enters from a world of insecurities to a world of peace. The narrator’s jealousy and ignorance, is seen in many parts throughout the story. An example of Bub’s jealousy is when he says, â€Å"I waited in vain to hear my name on my wife’s sweet lips†¦ but I heard nothing of the sort. More talk of Robert†, (Carver, Pg. 98). Not only does he show jealousy, Bub also shows ignorance when he stereotypes against Robert. As if stereotyping against Robert wasn’t enough, Bub goes on to stereotype against Robert’s late wife Beulah, as he sarcastically said, â€Å"Beulah! That’s a name for colored woman†, (Carver, Pg. 5). Beulah passed away in her lost battle to gland cancer. He also showed his ignorance when he quoted, â€Å"I wasn’t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me†, (Carver, Pg. 94). Overall, the way he expressed himself about Robert, â€Å"the blind man†, in the story simply said a lot about him. Bub comes out from a world of insecurities to a world of peace, the moment he lets himself be guided by Robert. They drew a cathedral; a symbol of faith, conversion, creativity, and strength. It was like nothing else in my life up to now†, (Carver, Pg. 103). The narrator faced his insecurities with Robert as well as his ability to interact with others. At first Bub could find no significance to it and found it hard to explain to Robert. It wasn’t until Robert told him to close his eyes and continue drawing, that made a light bulb in his head go on, â€Å"It’s really something†, (Carver, Pg. 103). Bub was blinded before he realized how ignorant he was in regards to his marriage as well as with Robert. In conclusion we face ignorance on an everyday basis. It shows our lack of knowledge and sometimes reaches extreme measures. Ignorance occurs when people believe they know everything and act upon it, when this isn’t reality. This is a quality that the narrator possessed. Without knowing, his inability to see the positive in people almost caused him his marriage. He was so caught up with his insecurities that he almost oversaw his wife’s attempted suicide. It’s important to admit and overcome ignorance in order to find the inner peace within oneself.
